The California Coastal Horse Rescue of Ojai

The Rescuing, Stories, Help a Horse Day, and How you can Help

Who They Are

California Coastal Horse Rescue in Ojai is a rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption center that strives on giving ponies and horses another chance at life. When we went this past Sunday and Wednesday, we can assure you they cultivate nothing but the best environment for these horses to be in, handling them with so much love, care, effort, and work.

The Rehabilitation Process

Adri Howe, executive director at CCHR, explains that when a horse is brought in, they are quarantined for two weeks, and if the doctors need them there for more time, they will be kept quarantined for as long as needed. CCHR is very strict on their protocols, and the horses must be disinfected and vaccinated. From there, they will be ready to start the rehabilitation process. People then start to learn the horses’ character traits and begin to meet the other horses at the rescue.

“They don’t have depression, they live a new day every day. If they come to us dangerous, it’s because they were made that way. But they can ALWAYS get better.”

Breezze

Breeze was the star of the show this past Sunday. In size, she was the largest horse, but don’t let that fool you, she was the friendliest, sweetest girl. She is the newest member, brought in last month due to her owner having health complications beyond their control. Adri says, “Someone loved her.” She feels nothing but respect and gratitude for Breeze’s past owners because that was their baby. Adri is confident and knows they will find the best owner for her.

Amigo

Amigo was taken in by the rescue at just 8 months old. He had a deformed shoulder, but that never made him feel any different. Adri tells us he never met any strangers and treated everyone the same. Unfortunatly, Amigo sadly recently passed away at 19 years old. Adri holds Amigo near and dear to her heart and it showed in the way she spoke of him.

Jupiter

Jupiter was the one that caught my attention on Sunday, as she was more distant than the other horses. She was very fragile and malnourished when she was rescued by CCHR. But with the help and patience of all the wonderful people at the rescue, she has been able to gain weight and is now a very healthy horse. Adri tells us Jupiter came in wanting a connection, and it’s so beautiful seeing that she was able to make it and that she’s ready to find her owner.

The Help a Horse Event

Help a Horse Day is an annual event that includes local vendors, activities for kids, live music, and a showcase of their beautiful ponies and horses.

It was an amazing environment, and I had the best time on Sunday. When we went back on Wednesday, Adri tells us that Help a Horse Day was made possible by the sponsors, as it was all them.

The Adoption Process

Adri tells us that at CCHR, they do not take adoptions lightly. They care and love all their rescues so much, so it’s important to them that they go to the right person. She says you can’t just show up expecting to take the one you want, and that people have to come in to work with the horses. It’s crucial that the horses keep their physical, mental, and stable health. The potential owners must be good with stableizing and protocols, and they will have to show how experienced they actually are. She also tells us horses are pure instinct, and depending on how you are feeling toward them, they will mirror your energy back.

“We do it for them, they are going to a nice home, and their owner loves them.”

Even after adoption, CCHR keeps track of all horses to make sure they are doing well and get updated on them each month. They would never want anyone having any complications down the line that would cause them to end up back at the rescue.

CCHR shows generous amounts of grace. Even when they no longer have the horses with them, they will still always care for the lovely horses. Adri was very selfless, and not once when we went on Wednesday did she bring up donations.

Not until Rosie asked Adri during the interview about that, and Adri says that the average cost for one horse is $300–$400 a month. She says they also offer sponsorship for $350 a month, and the person can choose the horse.
